Let's face it, Windows XP is the most stable and most usable OS on the market. Many of you don't want the baggage that comes with Vista. And even though Windows 7 looks to be the future XP, that won't be for a very long time. And you still have the compatibility issues of Windows 7. So many of us are still using good old XP. Many hacked versions of XP have showed up on the internet as well, giving the dated operating system new life, since you can no longer buy XP. Netbook users are also choosing XP.
But, obliviously XP is showing it's age. When released in 2001, the interface was "Next-Gen", now it's somewhat "Past-Gen". Many users crave the dark and sleek interface of the newer OS's. But they also don't want the hassle of using programs such as WinBlinds to convert XP.
While there are many dark themes out there, the most popular being the Zune theme (Google it), many don't include login screens to replace the old blue "Welcome" screens. But I've found an easy way of matching one great theme, two colors (Black & Blue), and two colored login screens. Without having to download any styling programs. The login screens contain an updated Windows XP logo (Featuring the new Windows symbol), with sleek colors and a sleek background. The logo looks like what could have been XP 2.0 if Microsoft did not make Vista.
Instructions:
1. Download the kit here.
2. In order to use third-party themes on Windows XP, you need open "UXTender.exe". This installs a tiny patch. Without it, you can only use Window's included themes.
3. Open "Le505.exe". This will install the theme. The theme is Lunar Element v5.1. It includes black & blue colors.
4. Once installed, right click on your desktop, and click "Properties". Use the drop-down theme menu, and select the theme "LE5". The default color is blue. Click "Apply". To change the color to black, click the "Appearance" tab, and then use the "Color Scheme" drop-down menu, select Black. The compact versions give you smaller buttons, the regular have larger buttons. Click "Apply" and close the window.
5. Take a look at your new theme! Like what you see? Now it's time to try out the included wallpaper. Open the "Black Wallpaper" or the "Blue Wallpaper". Right click the photo and select "Set as Background". When your ready, move on to step 6.
6. Now let's get crazy! *Joking* It's time to install the login screens. First decide which one you want, blue or black. You can always uninstall and change it later. Once you have mentally chosen the color you want, open the folder "Blue Login Screen" or "Black Login Screen". Now, right click on "logonui_color.exe" and click "Move to..." from the menu. A window will popup. Click to highlight your C: drive. Make sure it's the C: drive. Then click "Ok". Now open "logon install.reg". When the prompt opens, click "Yes" and wait for a confirmation. Once the message pops up, your done! If you ever want to uninstall the login screen, just open the uninstall file located in the same folder.
7. Restart your PC. You now have a brand new login screen to match your theme. Enjoy your new theme! If you have any questions, email me at: nschaer@zoho.com.
