Publisher's Description: |
FTP over TLS support will be mandatory. In 3.10.0, opportunistic FTP over TLS to strengthen security was introduced with overwhelming success, thousands of broken servers have been fixed in the process. To further tighten security, FTP over TLS will soon become mandatory, the fallback to plaintext FTP will be removed.
32bit FileZilla for Windows will be dropped. Data has shown that more than 99% of all users have a 64bit capable CPU. If you're still using a 32bit Windows and want to continue using FileZilla, simply upgrade to a more modern operating system.
UTF-8 will be required, fallbacks to other encodings will be removed. As required by RFC 2640, use of any encoding other than UTF-8 requires explicit negotiation. Unfortunately the negotiation procedure isn't specified and hence other encodings simply cannot be used.
Support for the LIST command will be removed. In its place MLSD will be used as defined in RFC 3659. The problem with LIST is that its output isn't specified. As such it is impossible to reliably obtain directory listings using LIST. MLSD on the other hand uses a well-defined listing format. MLSD has been introduced more than 8 years ago, by now all server administrators had have more than enough time to upgrade their servers to be MLSD capable.
Once the new version will be out, old versions will stop working. There's already code in recent versions that prevents them from starting past a certain date

2014-05-17 - FTP over TLS support added to https://ftptest.net/
The online FTP server tester https://ftptest.net/ has been updated with FTP over TLS support. Both the modern explicit TLS negotiation as well as the legacy implicit negotiation can be tested.
The server tester can be used by server administrators and users to verify that their server has been setup correctly and in full accordance with the FTP specifications. The test tool has been specifically designed to point out even the smallest of problems, to ensure that servers passing the test are compatible with as many clients as possible.
2014-01-28 - Advisory: Malware downloads on third-party websites
As recently published on the avast! blog, modified versions of FileZilla tainted with malware are being distributed on some third-party websites.
This is by no means a new threat. While this instance is one of the largest to date, there have been many cases of modified versions spreading malware hosted on third-party websites for over a decade. We do not condone these actions and are taking measures to get the known offenders removed. Note that we cannot in general prevent tainted versions on third-party websites or prove their authenticity, especially since the FileZilla Project promotes beneficial redistribution and modifications of FileZilla in the spirit of free open source software and the GNU General Public License.
To avoid any risk when downloading FileZilla, we recommend that you only download FileZilla from the official FileZilla website or from SourceForge, the official download partner of FileZilla and many other open source projects.
